Working with athletes the first complaint I hear is the lack of consistency in there performance. Many believe that if they were more consistent that their overall performance would be better. Our performance is affected by many things. In golf, players are playing on different courses each tournament, in different weather conditions, sometimes in different countries. There are a lot of variables to performance that are out of the athletes’ control. What is in the athlete’s control is the preparation on a day to day basis. For some this is boring, while others use a routine of preparation to increase their chances of performing at their best. Preparation for an athlete may include visualizing their performance, stretching the body to get it ready, showing up to the competition site in a timely manner, and emotionally being ready to go. To perform consistently one must prepare consistently. Finding what works takes a little experimenting, but sticking to the routine takes discipline. The other aspect to look at is, what are the real reasons your performance is inconsistent? Is it a mechanical issue, physical energy issue, or a mental issue? What I preach to my clients is to constantly evaluate performance to detect patterns and fix the poor patterns as soon as they arise. And another thing about consistency, shoot for consistently excellent, not just consistent. I have seen a lot of consistent mediocre athletes, nobody wants to be mediocre.
