I constantly read books that deal with performance. When it comes to business books I find that the books miss the mark on what really drives the success of a company. So many books are about leadership and how to make “others” do what you want them to do. The books that focus on how to change others have it all wrong. The goal of performance is to make each individual perform at his or her peak while being in congruent with the company’s mission. So often I am hired to fix ’someone else’ in the company instead of each individual taking responsibilty for his or her job. The shift needs to be made from, what do I need from others, to what do I need from myself. This shift is crucial for the entire performance landscape. Leadership is important, yet will only truly happen with those that work on themselves instead of looking at ways to change others. Performance comes down to you and how are you going to show up today.
