Working with achievement driven individuals I see the added pressure these performers put on their outcome for a competition. The competition could be a golf tournament or a sales presentation. The problem that comes up is the high expectations that are felt by these performers. All of them will tell me how important the next big event is and that they expect to win. This sounds like confidence coming through, however some are just expecting to win because they have put in the hard work and if they lose they are crushed. Peak performers want to win, but they focus on the process of the performance. They look for ways to stay in the moment and only concern themselves with what is in their control. When we are obsessed with expecting to win, we lose sight of the actual performance. Good process will lead to good outcome. Start checking in with the next time you label some event as really important where your focus goes; to the outcome or the process. You can control the process, but you can’t always control the outcome.
