The Training Formula is quite simple. It is based on my Take AIM (Assess, Implement, Master) coaching system. The first step is to assess your current goals, skills, and challenges. You have to have a starting point from which to develop a plan. This is an honest appraisal of where you are at compared to where you want to be. Assessing your current state can be completed by others that you trust. This could be your business partner, your coach, or your spouse. Getting input from others will get you to see where there are gaps in your performance.

I will give specific ideas on how you will assess different areas of your performance. This will range from questions, to exercises, to full performance reviews. The starting point is crucial to identify all the roles you have to perform and where you want to be with each of these roles. This is related to raising your standards of who you are and what you expect from yourself. What type of parent do you want to be, what type of career do you want to be proud of, and what type of community to you want to contribute to as your life moves forward? These are all questions that need to be pondered in the first step of assessment.

It is easy to focus on just one role in your life and make changes. The challenge is knowing that when one role has changed it affects all roles in life. Take for example a sales person who is motivated to be the leading producer at his company. He will focus on that part of his life at the expense of the other roles in his life. A year goes by and he achieved the sales goal, but finds he is disconnected from his family and his health has suffered. Is this a peak performer? I don’t think so. Today we are asked to do more and be more. The challenge is getting the most out of your performance so you can spend less time producing more and being flexible enough to be at your peak in different roles.

Don’t get me wrong, being driven to achieve great things is something to embrace. However understanding the end goal and really wanting all that it will bring is key to success and happiness. Today is the day to assess all your roles in your life. Look at which roles need better performance and which are at an acceptable standard. All your roles interrelate, be conscious of the changes you want to make.
