Without Tiger in the field for the 2008 Players Championship I wasn’t that excited to watch the final round. Being such a golf fan I had to watch the best players in the world play a difficult course in tough wind conditions. I enjoy seeing the tour players have to think before a shot. What I mean is playing a difficult course with high winds will make even the best players look average, ask Kenny Perry. Deciding on club selection, hitting different shots, and trying to “hold on” are different challenges than the standard tour event. What was so interesting was the contrast in styles of the leaders. Paul Goydos is a throwback journeyman pro who plays within himself and finds a way to get the ball in the hole. His attitude was refreshing as he enjoyed just being a part of the tournament with no expectations of how he was going to finish. Then there is Sergio Garcia who put on a ball striking clinic with accurate, powerful drives and has had high expectations from the media to be the best player never to have won a major. Sergio definitely took advantage of the opportunity and saved par on 18 and hit a great shot on the first playoff hole after Paul found the water. The difference between winning and losing is subtle, it is the player that gets the job done when it matters most and Sergio was the one this time around. I am cheering for Paul to get another opportunity to win a big one and maybe next time he will finish the deal.
