In a post a few months ago I wrote about how no golfer has really stepped up to be noticed and have a shot at challenging Tiger. I am not asking for a golfer to win 6 times a year, however it would be nice for a young player to actually win that has been vocal as wanting to challenge Tiger. Yesterday we may have seen such a player in Anthony Kim. He is a confident young player who has talked about challenging for number one in the world. He doesn’t seem to be phased by the pressures that go along with professional golf. He has stated in recent interviews that he has learned that he got a little lazy with his work ethic and it wasn’t as easy on the tour as he may have thought. He has plenty of talent and he has the attitude to go with it. The big difference now is he won a top tournament against a strong field and won easily. He came out with a four shot lead in the final round and stayed aggressive making birdies on the front nine and widening his lead. A lot of young players including Adam Scott have had leads and start playing “not to lose” in the final round and find that they get passed and either lose or have to wake up to finish the tournament. Winning can go a long way to make a player truly believe he belongs with the elite players. There are young players like Justin Rose and Jason Day who still need to win on the PGA Tour to be among the best. Finishing top 10 is nice, however years from now nobody will care. Did you get the job done and win when you had a chance. This past weekend Anthony Kim did finish, let’s hope he can step up when Tiger is close.
