This year marks the first time that a special event is happening that an amateur golfer gets the chance to play at a US Open course in close to the same conditions the major is played. This started by Tiger Woods saying that the typical 10 handicap golfer would not break 100 on a US Open set-up course. Many serious golfer thought Tiger was exaggerating, however more and more top players agreed and the special event was born. Fast forward to June 7th when a 10 handicap golfer will play Torrey Pines the week before the US Open followed by NBC television cameras. What is great about golf is that golfers can play many of the courses that great championships are contested. Golfers get to walk the same fairways and play the same game the pros play. You can’t say that about basketball or baseball. You can’t just go out and have a softball game at Fenway Park. This event will put in perspective how difficult the US Open is and the respect these players deserve. It would also quiet all those average players thinking they could play better then some pros. It will be fun to watch and see what the outcome is and how it compares with the tournament scores. There will be some pros in the tournament that will barely break 90. So what would you shoot?
